Good evening all!
Well, it's official....we have our
first claim. It is just outside of Red River, NM. We chose this creek due to easy access and accommodations nearby.
While your out digging, it's plenty for the family to do and see. The river is open to prospecting from about May to
late fall. During late summer it rains every afternoon, so take rain gear! We're only allowing sluicing and panning...no
motorized equipment. You can also metal detect within the stream bed.
While on the claim, take some
time and check out the old mining areas. Many of the buildings are still up....take a camera! Make your first
stop the Visitors Center in town. There are pamphlets that tell the history of every mining site on the claim.
There is also a museum in town with a large amount of historic mining equipment on display. Red River'sweb site is
www.redriver.org, check it out.
I've attached a map of our claim. The total size of the claim is 140 acres and follows the
stream. For the rock hounds out there, you will find interesting rocks and crystals. Wild life is everywhere,
be mindful of the bears!
I hope you all get a chance to check out the claim. The rules for the claim are posted
on the AMPO website,
www.AMPO.us .
